#Vulcan – March’s Lion

I have now had the pleasure of enduring my first-ever official blizzard. The weather was completely miserable. It wasn’t the snow, it was the wind that made it so uncomfortable.

I decided to take it upon myself to take photos of the same subject at regular intervals in order to capture the depth of snow. The snow didn’t get terribly deep, but the drifts got huge.

Challenges and Contests

I’m a writer.

I mean, I haven’t published any fiction as yet, but I write. Every day. Often it’s just a little blog post. Sometimes it’s a little more technical. Sometimes it’s a lot more technical. (And I have published technical papers, so I guess I could argue that I’m a professional writer. Ha!)

One thing that people like me – those who write for pleasure but aren’t really making a career of it – often do is sign on to various writing challenges and contests. I enjoy the challenges and occasionally, I sign up to do a contest.Continue reading “Challenges and Contests”

Camp Chili – Recipe

I may have mentioned before that I hate to cook. I really hate to cook.

But in the last week, I’ve discovered the joys of the mini Crock Pot I just got. I have it in my office and put a meal-sized portion in it in the morning, so I have a warm, delicious meal at lunch time.

Autism and Fun with Literalism

It’s hard to know what to do when someone you love is given a diagnosis of a ‘problem’ that you don’t understand well. There’s always some relief in having a diagnosis, because it’s simply easier to deal with something you can name.

Autism is one such diagnosis. Oh, the horror of finding you that your child or someone that you love is autistic. You’ve seen Rain Man. You’ve heard what they’re saying over there at Autism Speaks. It’s a death sentence. It’s institutionalization. It’s the end of the world.Continue reading “Autism and Fun with Literalism”

Unexpected Exhaustion

Today’s been one of those days. All told, it was a good day. But I’m completely whipped.

About every-other Saturday (probably a little less frequent than that), I drive to Ithaca, NY for a fencing lesson (or two or three). It’s about a two hour drive one way, and uses up at least six hours of my Saturday, so I don’t do it every week, but whenever time, energy, and weather permits.

Today was one of those Saturdays when I decided that I’d make the trip.Continue reading “Unexpected Exhaustion”

Hercules – The Aftermath

Well, we got pounded again last night. I didn’t measure (I should have), but I’m sure we got close to two feet of snow from winter storm Hercules.

Here’s what our driveway looked like this morning, before I cleared it.

Check out the drifts! Can you tell where the driveway is supposed to be? Compare this with the similar shot from yesterday here.
