We bought a Roku, a lovely little device that plugs into my TV that lets me stream Netflix on the bigger screen.
It’s now time for me to indulge in the phenomenon known as ‘binge-watching.’
Now, keep in mind that I really often enjoy parking in front of the TV just to stare at it mindlessly, but there are times when I just need to not move. Lately, I’ve had a therapy light (to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SADS) right next to my cozy chair, which is conveniently placed to watch TV. In order for the therapy light to work, I need to bask in it for about a half hour. And what better thing to do during that half hour than to watch TV.
Enter the Roku.
For whatever reason, I’ve been craving the shows I watched as a kid. As it happens, one of my childhood favorites is on Netflix. I loved watching Emergency! (or as I called it, Squad 51), and dreamed of becoming a fireman when I was but a wee lass.
Today, when I was sunning myself and trying to cope with the unfortunate combination of a migraine and a sinus headache, I watched some Emergency!.

It brought me back to more optimistic days.
You know, life hasn’t worked out exactly as I had planned. I’m obviously not a fireman, an EMT, nor a police officer. However, I can’t complain. Things have worked out just fine. I’m a scientist instead, and working to make the world a better place in my own way.
But it is nice to think back to the more innocent days, and wonder about what might have been.
