J is for Mae Jemison – Astronaut

Mae Jemison (1956 – ) is a physician and a former NASA astronaut.

Dr. Jemison grew up in Chicago, Illinois. She studied medicine at Cornell Medical College and graduated in 1981. She went into practice briefly then worked for the Peace Corps. After astronaut Sally Ride flew in 1983, Dr. Jemison decided to apply to join the space program at NASA.

In 1992, Dr. Jemison flew her only mission to space during mission STS-47 as a mission specialist. She retired from NASA in 1993 to pursue her interests in the interaction in how social science interacts with technology.
