Remembering Art

Back in November, I participated in Art Every Day month. I re-committed myself to doing something artsy every day. Even though I wasn’t entirely successful, I still enjoyed the process and truly benefited from the reminder to keep art alive in my life.

During November “15 minutes of art” became a daily task on my to-do list. I haven’t removed it.

Every day I look at that reminder and at least think about the art projects (sewing, writing, or drawing) that I have simmering in the back of my mind. And once or twice a week, I actually do something about it.

And I’m always a little surprised at what I can do in 15 minutes. (I’m also not at all surprised at how often 15 minutes becomes an hour and a half.)

Today, I put in my 15 minutes, working on a small thing I started (in a 15 minute span) a few days ago.

I wanted to draw a chicken with a sword. (Because, the world needs more chickens with swords.)

I sketched something out one evening before going to bed.

The original sketch. I also thought a rooster could benefit from a knightly helm.

For whatever reason, I’m never entirely satisfied with my hand-drawn art. Maybe the lines aren’t crisp enough or the colors aren’t bright enough. I dunno. But these days, any sketch I do is rapidly converted into computer graphics – because I can.

So today I did as I always do, and brought my sketch into my computer and started to outline things for the next draft.

Still a lot of work to be done, but I think it'll be cool when finished. I used red, so I could see my lines over the original sketch.

This will take me a while to get it just so. And maybe I’ll go nuts and do the same image on illustration board with watercolors or acrylics at some future time. (Note to self: buy new acrylics and watercolors.)

For now, I’ll amuse myself by taking a quarter of an hour here or there to work on the computerized version. Look for progress here as I go along.
