Prompt – Tell us about your favourite autumnal edible treat.
——
The thing about autumn is that is seems to be a time of great eating. It makes good sense, I suppose. Eat it while it’s fresh from the harvest. Put on some extra pounds. Survive the leaner months of winter.
This doesn’t make nearly as much sense in modern, “first world” society, where food tends to be abundantly (perhaps overly so) available year round. The feasting of fall has shifted from a practicality to a social event wherein everyone gains a few pounds while enjoying each others’ company.
Well, I can’t argue with that. I always like a good excuse to hang out with friends and eat. A lot.
Of the typical fall treats, I do have a few favorites that I eagerly await annually. Pumpkin spice is one of those. Anything with pumpkin spice is probably good – provided it lacks cinnamon.
Really, really super-sweet sweet potatoes are another thing I look forward to.
And for whatever reason, brussels sprouts. I could have those just about any time, but it seems as if we eat them most often at Thanksgiving time.
But it’s mostly the junk food. The cakes. The cookies. The candies. All the delicious things that start with the letter ‘c.’ That’s my favorite thing about the fall.
I only wish I could enjoy those things without the concurrent weight gain.
