Leafy Tuesday – Starting Seeds

It’s mid-March. The official start of spring is but a few days away. (Though I’ll believe it when I see it.)

I want it to be spring – and summer – pretty badly. I don’t think there’s enough lotion in the world to make my poor dry skin feel good again. I welcome humidity. And thunderstorms. And mud.

In a burst of what may be misguided optimism, I decided to start some seeds last night. The hope is that by mid-May, when the greatest danger of late-season frost is past, these little plants will be big and strong enough to go outside.

I went into the basement and pulled out my old seed starting supplies, bought some new seed starter medium at the homer store, and I got started.

This whole tray is nothing but heirloom tomatoes. I don't like tomatoes, but my husband does.

I had to take a brief break to watch Cosmos, and when I came back to sewing seeds, I had to plant some cosmos.

Cosmos seeds
Carl Sagan would be proud.

In all, I planted four trays worth of seeds, then took them back down into the basement, where I have a heating pad and grow-light set-up.

Four trays of plants warm and cozy, protected from the blue chill of winter outside.

Now the waiting begins. Most will germinate in the next few weeks. I hope.

Waiting for the growing to start.

I’ll keep you posted!
