Do You Feel the Pressure?

Prompt – Do you work well under pressure?

——

Well? Do you punk?

I find that pressure is a necessary ingredient for getting things finished.

The necessary pressure usually comes from me – my own self-imposed deadlines. Occasionally, the pressure is external, like a massive deadline for a grant proposal or review. If I don’t impose deadlines on myself, however, things just don’t get done.

I place pressure on myself by simply putting things on my to-do list. Once it’s there, I have to complete it. No excuses. (Which reminds me. I forgot to check something off the list today.)

Things not on the list aren’t completed. I do have to think carefully about what I put on the list, to ensure that I can actually complete all the tasks in the time allotted. Otherwise, I’ll get frustrated and suddenly nothing gets done.

When the pressure gets too great, I also tend to falter. Anxiety kicks in, and I begin to lose focus. Then suddenly, I quit doing anything.

My challenge is to keep the pressure at just the right level. I have to keep reasonable expectations for myself.

After a few decades of kicking around on this Earth, I think I finally have a good handle on what I am actually capable of, and I’ve been able to accomplish quite a lot. Let’s see if I can keep that trend going…

  1. I definitely am feeling the pressure with my wife’s situation right now. It feels like it’s beyond my control and I am struggling to deal with it. I suspect this is a “Zen” moment where I just have to let go, but letting go isn’t what I am used to doing. Great post today!
