Go Big or Go Home

Prompt – Discuss your experience with the saying, “go big or go home.”

——

When people say “go big or go home,” I always feel like they’re trying to prove something. I think that’s because most of the time, the person saying that is some manner of fitness buff.

Now, I know the sentiment is more like: “Always aim for the Moon, even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars” (quote by W. Clement Stone). The latter sentiment I totally agree with. I mean, once you’re committed to something, go all out. Do the absolute best you can. See how far you can go.

It’s like when I was in high school considering my future career. I never once thought, ‘y’know, I think a B.S. in geology will provide me with a fine career.’ My attitude was more like, ‘I’m going to college. I’m spending all this money. Double major to Ph.D. is the only way to go.’ If I failed, I’d at least have a Bachelor’s degree and probably also a Master’s.

And, hey, guess what? I have that Ph.D. And even though things haven’t quite worked out like I had thought they might, I’m still very happy with the outcome. I like what I do. I have fun (most of the time). I have so much going on, I kind of wish there were more hours in the day, or that I could get by with less sleep. Almost everything I do is something I’m really interested in doing, and doing well.

Yup, things have worked out great. I set a goal that seemed really out of reach when I began, and managed to achieve it. And even though my career isn’t exactly how I envisioned it back in high school, it’s perfectly fine.

The only time I’ve used that particular phrase was after I met my (now) fiancee online. We got to know each other through emails and phone conversations, and I was already sure I was in love before we even met in person. My “go big or go home” moment was deciding I’d do my best to marry her, despite the fact that she lives in another country.

Okay, so it’s only Toronto, Canada. I’m not a terribly ambitious person. (grin)

My favorite quote for expressing the sentiment is from the TV show Third Rock from the Sun: “Where I come from, we have a saying. ‘If you’re going to punch a guy in the nose, aim for the back of his head. If he has one.'”

What an awesome quote! I might write a post based upon that (if you don’t mind). It makes me think of swordplay (and of boxing as well).

Mind? Not at all. It’s not my quote, and certainly not my idea. “Follow through” is important in many physical activities, from golf to tae kwon do.
