What’s it about?

The authors discuss the utility of isotopes of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, and zinc for study of ancient environments, dietary preferences, and food chains.

Why does it matter?

Traditionally (like ten years ago), isotopes of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen (and sulfur) have been the main focus of geochemical studies of fossils and rocks in order to reconstruct ancient biological systems. Nowadays, new instruments and methods mean access to new ways to study these same questions.

Why did I read this?

I have expertise with the use of carbon and oxygen from bones and teeth. Now I want to try calcium isotopes…
