Mystery Solved – Black, with Zipper

On Monday, I asked you all to identify this mystery object:

It's big. It's black. It says 'Motorola'.

Now, I offer the solution. I bought this way back in 1996 or 1997, for use when I was doing field work… Just in case.

Here’s what it looks like on the inside. Now do you see what it is?

My first cellular telephone. I think it was like a dollar a minute, but totally worth it if I needed it!

This is what cellular telephones were when they finally became ‘portable.’  There’s the antenna and the charger, and the massive battery pack.

A handset like the land-line phones that we were familiar with.

It even had the curly cord that always got tangled.

This phone served me well while I was doing field work as a graduate student. A few years later, I got my first pocket-able phone. And now I have a smart phone. It’s amazing how technology has changed!

I’m kinda tempted to take this to the Verizon store and see how they react. Naw, this is probably a collector’s item now!
