Photos My Son Takes – Storming the Castles

I’ve posted a few times (like here, here, and here) about the photographs my son takes. They’re always amazing, to me at least. He takes photos of seemingly dull things and makes them exciting. We think of his photographs as a window into his perception of the world. No doubt he looks at things differently than we do, as he is on the autism spectrum.

This weekend, we took a spontaneous trip up the Alexandria Bay, New York, to visit the 1000 Islands, and specifically visit Boldt Castle, for which we’ve had tickets for almost two years.

The boy recently got his own digital SLR camera (which matches his parents’), so I was looking forward to seeing what photos he would take.

His photos started out rather ordinary. Not terrible, but not breath-taking.

This one had potential – sunrise on Boldt Castle – but the horizon is crooked.

He didn’t seem very enthused by Boldt Castle, only giving us one or two ‘keeper’ photos, like this one:

We took a longer river boat ride further down the Saint Lawrence River to visit Singer Castle. We only spontaneously decided to take this trip when we were buying tickets for the ferry to Boldt Castle. I’m glad we did. Because the magic happened.

Early in the trip, we had been encouraging and suggesting (strongly) to the boy that he ought to take more pictures. Once we stopped bugging him, he started taking photos on his own. And they wound up fantastic. As always.
