The day’s nearly over, and I have no blog post for today yet, so here it is.
What things might distract me from writing? Today it’s sewing.
Good idea = hard work. Cord makes button loops on the other side. Sewn by hand. 4 to go, then other sleeve. #sewing pic.twitter.com/zmu5DyPp6D

I’m working on a kirtle, which is a type of medieval underdress. I decided that I wanted to use lots and lots of little pearl buttons to close the front and to close the sleeves.
I had a bit of a disaster earlier in the week and wound up with not enough fabric at the cuffs to allow for the overlap necessary for ordinary buttons. So I decided to find some cord and make some loops in order to join one side to the other.
Because this is meant to be a 14th century-esque dress, I decided to do as much hand-stitching as possible. And with all the little buttons (nine per sleeve and who knows how many will be needed to button the front!), there’s a lot of hand-stitching needed.
I spent an hour and a half getting eight buttons attached, and now my fingers hurt. Luckily, I haven’t opted to make all my buttons, nor do I object to using a sewing machine whenever the seams aren’t going to be obvious. The only exception is buttonholes, which are clearly visible, but I’m just not willing to do by hand. I also try to find buttons that a least look medieval-ish.
Anyway, here it is right now. It needs lots and lots of buttons. And some more buttons. But it’s almost done!

I’ll post again when it’s finished. If it ever gets finished.
