Prompt – If you didn’t have to be concerned about money or expertise, what would be your ideal job?
——
Ideal job, eh? Frankly, I think I’m in a pretty good position right now. I like my job. Most days, I look forward to going in (although I don’t enjoy the getting up in the morning part). My job does require a lot of special expertise, which I’m really happy to use. There are bad days, too. But how can one measure the greatness of good days without the contrast of the bad. Really, bad days aren’t that terrible, because those are the days when I demonstrate why it is that I have this job and no one else does.
The one thing I wish were actually part of my job description was writing as part of public outreach. You know, keeping this blog. I do it, in part, for the sake of science. I wish I didn’t feel like it was an extracurricular activity. Something about academia makes one feel that non-technical writing is not worthy. Luckily for me, however, outreach and ‘broader impacts’ have become more and more important in the funding game, and I find myself in a good position with an established blog and readership.
Hmm. Maybe I’m on to something….

For a long time I’ve told people that I want to be a toymaker when I grow up. It’d be the same kind of work I do now but with very different goals. More recently I’ve been thinking that I might like to go into the security field, either developing security products or teaching people how to protect and defend themselves. (A few years ago a career counselor gave me several “what kind of work would you enjoy?” tests. Design and security scored the highest on all of them.)
