On Concerts and Straight No Chaser

My husband and I went to a concert last night. It was a performance by an a cappella group called Straight No Chaser. They are a ten-man group that joined up way back when, when they were all students at Indiana University.

I first learned of Straight No Chaser a couple of years ago, when my husband and I were fortuitously handed a pair of tickets to one of their concerts in Atlantic City. Now I’m a big fan. (And for some strange reason, SNC has become my nearly exclusive choice of music to listen to when I’m sewing.)

We knew we were coming to visit Atlantic City this weekend, so, for giggles, we checked to see if SNC were playing. They were.

The music they make is phenomenal, and their attitude is inspirational. They start every concert with a request for people to mute their phones… But to take all the photos and videos that they want. Mid-way through the concert, they themselves take photos of the audience to post on Facebook, so audience members can tag themselves.

It seems like kind of a strange attitude at first pass, but when you consider that SNC owes much of its initial recognition to a viral video on YouTube, their attitude toward social media makes perfect sense.

The song that got them started on You Tube was their rendition of the “12 days of Christmas.” Another popular song of theirs is the “Christmas Can-Can.” A video for this can be seen here. Both are hysterically funny.

They also cover popular songs, like Tainted Love, which was popular in the 80’s.

So we were at their concert tonight. They were great. I took some photos.

I hope you take a moment to check out their music. Their albums are available on iTunes and it’s not just Christmas music! Their most recent album, under the influence, has no Christmas songs whatsoever. They do covers of popular songs and perform with many well-known artists, including Seal, Elton John, Barry Manilow, and Dolly Parton.

I think you’ll enjoy them as much as I do.

Wow, these guys are good. I see why you like them.

If you like a cappella 80s music, have you heard Perpetuum Jazzile’s version of Toto’s “Africa“?

Speaking of sewing, do you ever make gloves? I lost the gloves I wear when riding my motorcycle, and I’m thinking of trying to make some to replace them.
