H is for Caroline Herschel
Caroline Herschel (1750 – 1848) was a German astronomer known best for her discoveries of several comets.
Caroline came to the study of astronomy by a roundabout course. At the age of 22, she moved to England to be her brother’s housekeeper, and wound up being his assistant making and using telescopes. She became an accoplished scientist in her own right, and was the first woman to be paid a salary for her contributions to science.
At the age of 96, Caroline was awarded the King of Prussia’s Gold Medal of Science for her lifetime of accomplishments.
